Contamination Tip Thursday! Glass bottles and jars can be infinitely recycled but not all glass is created equal. Household items like ovenware, drinking glasses, windows, mirrors and ceramic dishes (any glass other than bottles or jars) should stay out of your recycling bins! During the recycling process, glass is sorted by colour and melted down. Glass bottles and jars are made from soda-lime glass, which has a low melting temperature. Ovenware or heat resistant glass is made of tempered glass, which melts at a higher temperature, so it can cause un-melted blobs to appear in the recycled glass. Products like windows and mirrors are coated with chemical substances to make them tinted or reflective, even further complicating the recycling process. Lastly, ceramics are made of a number of materials (like clay) in addition to glass, which brings up the issue of contamination if ceramic and glass products are melted together. If items are reusable, consider donating them or offering them to friends. If broken, the items are garbage. For handler safety, put the pieces in a non-recyclable container and place in the garbage. #contaminationtipthursday #keepitgreen #glassrecycling #knowledgeispower #wishcyclingharms ...
